Commandos for West Bengal stations

KOLKATA, 2nd December,2008: Commandos of the West Bengal police will be deployed in four major railway stations in the State in a move to tighten security in the wake of the recent terrorist strike in Mumbai. Vigil has also been intensified across the State and along its border with Bangladesh.

The decision to deploy the commandos in Sealdah and Howrah stations as well as in Kharagpur station and in New Jalpaiguri in north Bengal was taken at a review meeting of senior State and police officials here on Monday.

Intelligence inputs of various agencies were discussed at the meeting. The government railway police admitted that given its present strength it would be difficult to tackle any eventuality and there is a requirement for additional security forces in the major railway hubs, sources in the Eastern Railway said.

Elaborate security measures were being taken in the city though there was no specific threat, the city’s Commissioner of Police, Gautam Mohan Chakravarty, said.
