Poll alliance between Trinamool and Congress likely


KOLKATA, OCT 27(PTI): West Bengal Congress leaders today met External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee to discuss a possible poll alliance with the Trinamool Congress with party leaders apprising him of their views on the issue. State Congress Working President Pradip Bhattacherjee, who is overseeing the Bengal party affairs along with another senior leader Subrata Mukherjee, said “Pranabda gave the green signal to the Pradesh Congress Committee to start negotiations with secular political parties to take on the Communist Party of India (Marxist)-led Left Front in the polls.“Pranabda also said that PCC has taken a correct decision of following the line proposed by (Priya Ranjan) Dasmunshi,” he said.
Bhattacharjee and Mukherjee are overseeing party affairs in the State after Information and Broadcasting Minister, Dasmunshi, who is the PCC chief, fell ill.Elections to the Howrah Municipal Corporation are scheduled on November 30 as also the municipalities of Berhampore, Krishnanagar and Jhargram.Bypolls are also due to the State assembly constituencies of Sujapur in Malda, Para in Purulia district and in Nandigram in East Midnapur district, the date for which is yet to be announced by the Election Commission.
The talk of a possible seat-sharing between the Trinamool Congress and the Congress in these elections assume significance in the backdrop of forthcoming Lok Sabha elections, Congress party sources said.
